Pregnancy and Dental Health

Dental health is very important during pregnancy! Pregnant moms with dental disease are 7 times more likely to have a premature or low birth weight baby. Pregnant moms should be brushing, flossing, eating healthy foods, and getting dental checkups and treatment to stay healthy and protect their babies.

After the baby is born it is also important to care for their gums and teeth. You can do this by:

  • Cleaning your baby’s gums after every feeding.
  • Putting your baby to sleep with a bottle of water only;  not breast milk, formula, or juice.
  • Brushing twice a day once your baby gets his or her first tooth.
  • Taking your baby to the dentist by the time they are 1 year old to have his or her teeth and gums checked.
